The smashing plates

A look at the lower end of the scale at international events in season 2004/05

For those eliminated at the group stage of international events, all is not lost. Some choose to play in the plate competition - the safety net of consolation for those assigned to a tough first round group.

Less formal at international events than the plate contests staged at domestic opens, only rarely are referees employed and games are fitted in where and when possible around the continuing main event.

Occasionally they can't be completed due to time and other restraints. The final in London was left unplayed due to players needing to depart in time for their scheduled trains home, whilst a semi-final at the South Queensferry GP was treated as the final, since neither of those involved in the other semi wished to contest their match as both wanted to be available to watch the main final.

With luck of the draw playing a part in who remains in the main draw after the group stage, there is little consistency in who competes in the plate, though some have been known to try for elimination at the group stage, so that they may have the more extended run of games offered by the consolation competition.

And whilst it is usually only the final that is noteworthy in itself, shock results in earlier rounds are certainly not unknown - John Moore's 6-1 victory over Davy Clegg in Dumfries or Kevin Adderley's overtime success against Mike Burns at the South Queensferry GP, for instance.

The most prominent winner over season was Kasper Bennett, who faced early elimination on goal difference from a difficult group at the Belfast Grand Prix, but gained some cheer in beating Paul Lawrenson in the plate final.
