England captain heading for the top ten

By Matt Lishman

The outcome of the Welsh Grand Prix Under-15 event turned out to be a very successful one for Matt Lishman, now on the brink of a top ten world ranking.

The event, somewhat disappointingly, attracted only 6 players. England national team quartet Sam Curtis, Matt Lishman, Dimitris Stemitsiotis and Jon Bryan were among the contestants. Adam Lampitt, brother of England Under-19 World Cup captain Matt, and Welshman Estevan Mellen also took part.

Curtis, stepping up from a disappointing World Cup campaign, flicked off in destructive manner, leaving Mellen in pieces after 6-1 victory. Clearly, Curtis was in no mood to mess around, as his deadly shooting struck fear into the rest of the players.

Stemitsiotis recorded his first victory since the World Cup, with a good win over Mellen. Curtis topped the group leaving Stemitsiotis in second, with the disappointing Mellen bottom.

Lishman also started in good form, comfortably beating the exciting prospect Adam Lampitt. Despite a controversial consolation from Lampitt, the Yorkshire player recorded a 3-1 win.

It wasn't all gloom for Lampitt though, as he managed a resounding 3-0 victory over Bryan. It wasn't to be a good day for the ever-improving Bryan, as he fell drastically to an on-form Lishman. In a very one-sided encounter, the English Under-15 captain won the game 6-0.

Lishman topped the group, with Lampitt finishing in second and Bryan bottom.

Curtis continued his fine form with a 3-2 semi-final triumph over Lampitt. Lishman also sustained his confident manner, with a superb 5-0 victory over Stemitsiotis.

It was to be an all Yorkshire Phoenix final, as Matt Lishman and Sam Curtis faced each other for the first time since the South Queensferry Grand Prix in April.

In a very tense final, Curtis looked to have put another one over Lishman, as he took an early lead.

However the 14-year old fought back in the second half to turn the game on its head and lead 2-1. Following a bad defensive mistake from the teenager, Curtis equalised late on.

It took extra time and a golden goal to win the game. The goal went to Lishman and the match finished 3-2.
