Napoli continue Major dominance
They may have yet to win the prestigious Europa Cup for Clubs, but Eaples Napoli continued to prove their worth in Majors, as they took another title in Elbeuf.
The elite Italian side have now won 8 of the last 9 Major team titles, and have reached the last 12 finals, in a record stretching back to March 2003.
In France, aside from a 3-0 win over Rochefort - Valéry Dejardin getting the game draw against Antonio Mettivieri - all matches were won 4-0 ahead of what is now becoming a traditional Major final against old rivals Perugia.
There, despite Massimiliano Nastasi's 4-0 drubbing of Mettivieri and Diego Venegas' creditable draw with Gil Delogne, wins for Massimo Bolognino (4-2 vs Francesco Mattiangeli) and Alain Hanotiaux (3-0 vs Stefano De Francesco), gave the Eagles a 2-1 match victory.
Perugia had disposed of Reggiana by a surprisingly comfortable 3-0 margin in the semis, whilst Napoli beat Charleroi, winners over Bologna Tigers on goal difference in the quarter-finals.
The Eagles could take a lead from their team member Bolognino in going one better than capturing Major titles. The Italian has won four World and European championships over the years, and added his first Major since August 2004 to that collection with individual success in Elbeuf.
A 2-1 sudden death victory over Spain's Carlos Flores sealed triumph in the northern French final.
As ever the route to the Major final was a tricky one. Shots were required against Joël Hanotiaux in the last 16 and overtime versus Sergio Loureiro in a 1-0 semi-final victory. In between, Gil Delogne was defeated 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
Valéry Dejardin, having caused somewhat of a surprise in winning the Elbeuf title last season, was on the end of a upset himself this time around, when Vasco Guimaraes easily deposed of the Belgian by five clear goals in the last 16.
Guimaraes then lost to Nastasi in the last eight, who in turn went down 4-3 in a high-scoring encounter with Flores in the semis.
