No-shows fail to detract from the battles of Dumfries
A disappointing turnout from youths put a sour taste on a nevertheless very good under-19/under-15 event in Dumfries.
With only five people turning up to take part in the youth event, the original group stages were crumpled somewhat. Both Dean Aitken and Matt Lishman won their groups by default, following no-shows from the Whitehead twins, Ant Collins, Tom Motley and Greenwood Dale Lions newcomer Khyre Joseph.
The other group was the only one to have all of its contenders - those being Sam Curtis, and local players Daryl Shanks and Nicole Kettles.
The game of the group came between Curtis and Shanks. In a tight first half, chances were few and far between, though, the match exploded into life in the second period. Curtis started the half the better of the two, although he could not convert multiple opportunities.
Following the chance of the match from Curtis, which was missed, Shanks began to pile on the pressure. The inevitable goal came just two minutes from time as Shanks scored a superb long shot, which turned out to be the winner.
Both players then deposed of beginner Kettles, 5-0 from Sam and 4-0 from Daryl.
The semi-finals turned out to be the Battle of the Scots and the Battle of the English.
In the Scots' tie, it was to be Aitken's day as he beat Shanks 2-1, having taking the lead on two occasions. The Englishmen's battle turned out to be a very tense and hard-fought semi. Admiral Lishman and Captain Curtis set sail toward victory on the Scottish coast.
Although, the match finished 0-0 in normal time, it took less than a minute of extra time for Lishman to take advantage of sloppy defending and win the match on Golden Goal.
In another close final, Aitken proved to Lishman that he was no softie, despite a lack of tournament appearances. Aitken won the match 1-0 and was crowned under-19 Dumfries champion.
Sam and Matt played out an under-15 final, despite no FISTF points being available due to lack of players. The England under-15 captain once again overcame Curtis and the constant touchline coaching from the Curtis camp. After a 1-1 draw, a penalty save and extra time, Lishman won 4-2 on shots.
